The UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) raised an important issue related to the Covid-19 pandemic. It first recognizes some positive impacts on the environment with a drop in greenhouse gas emissions. However, UNCTAD also raises attention to the fact that the sudden spread of plastic products to protect people is becoming a threat to our planet as Pamela Coke-Hamilton, UNCTAD’s director of international trade outlined “Plastic pollution was already one of the greatest threats to our planet before the coronavirus outbreak, the sudden boom in the daily use of certain products to keep people safe and stop the disease is making things much worse.
”Therefore, UNCTAD urges governments and businesses to identify non-fossil fuel plastic substitutes. The list of non-toxic, biodegradable or easily recyclable materials that could replace plastic includes many well-known materials, such as glass, ceramics, natural fibers, paper, cardboard, rice husk, natural rubber and animal proteins.
In Italpack cartons we are developing alternatives to plastic for more than 30 years. Our Gable Top product line is adapted not only to dairy products but thanks to our know-how and close relationship with our partners, we offer the possibility to use it for water, cereals, juices, wine, spices, biscuits, or soups using in cardboard which is a renewable and environmentally friendly raw material. Thus, without compromising the shelf-life and protection of the product.
Our EvoCup line is a breakthrough in the cup market dominated by plastic. EvoCup offers a reduction from 65% to 85% of the PE content for a similar or even better shelf-life. Products such as yogurts, fresh cheese, fruits, nuts, biscuits are now offered in a package which depending on local regulations can be recycled with paper. To illustrate the impact of EvoCup, imagine replacing the traditional plastic yogurts cups weighing 4 gr and containing 150 ml of products. A well-known producer in Europe is claiming an annual production of 300 million pieces. At a ratio of 75% decrease of PE usage, the saving in terms of plastic represents 900 tonnes of plastic.
That’s the reason, early adopters such as Biedermann Mölkerei, Mandara, Tesco, Conad, Fresco Senso, Vincenzo Caputo, TopFruit, Dream Fruits, Ponte Reale and many others are adopting EvoCup.
